Where: Wellington, New Zealand
What’s involved: From Courtenay Place it takes approx. 30 minutes to complete the 190 meter ascent.
The Hike: Starting in the city centre you will work your way up Majoribanks street until you reach Charles Plimmer Park. Once you reach the park you’ll see a sign for the Southern Walkway. Follow this walking track until you reach the Summit Walkway. This track will bring you on a steady steep climb up through the forest to the Mount Victoria Lookout.
The Verdict: Majoribanks street can make the walk seem daunting initially it’s a relatively easy and quick walk to the top. Although you can’t see any views as you go through the forest it still a lovely walk up through the woodland and the views at the lookout are wonderful. Up here you can see the entire harbour, the CBD as well as watch the planes in Wellington airport take off and land. Wellington’s weather is known to be temperamental so bring plenty of layers and be prepared for the infamous wind at the top. If the weather is nice and clear it worth getting up early and getting to the lookout in time for sunrise across the bay.
